Good Morning Britain Halts for Breaking News on Andy Burnham By-Election Victory
GMB Halts for Breaking News on Burnham By-Election Win

Good Morning Britain presenters Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh were forced to pause Friday's programme to discuss breaking news: Andy Burnham's victory in the Makerfield by-election. The duo spoke with political correspondent Louisa James about the implications for Sir Keir Starmer.

Starmer Under Pressure After Burnham Win

Garraway asked, "What will Sir Keir Starmer be thinking about all of this?" James replied, "One of the most surreal things about tonight is that Andy Burnham won't say out loud that he is going to take down the Prime Minister. But we all know that is why he is here. In his victory speech, he talked about hope and change and having unfinished business."

James noted that Burnham won 55% of the vote on a high turnout of nearly 60%, coming 9,000 votes ahead of Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon. She emphasised that Burnham's decision to head to the pub without taking questions allowed journalists to "read between the lines" of his victory speech.

Burnham's Victory Speech

Taking the stage after being declared Makerfield's new MP, Burnham said: "It is a chance now from this result tonight to build a new politics based on unity and hope. Turning away from the path that takes us to a divided, dark politics of the kind we see in the United States. We must now take this path and put this country back on the right path and bring people back together and get things working properly again."
