Brits Urged to Put a Fan in the Garden This Week for Mosquito Repellent
Brits Urged to Use Fans in Gardens to Repel Mosquitoes

As the UK braces for another mini heatwave this week, experts are urging Brits to place a fan in their gardens — not just for cooling down, but to repel mosquitoes. The warm, humid conditions create an ideal breeding ground for the pests, which can ruin summer evenings outdoors.

Mosquitoes Thrive in Heat and Humidity

Jon Saeed, managing director of Lighting Legends, explained that mosquitoes are particularly attracted to cool-toned garden lights. “A lot of people aren’t aware that these lights tend to attract mosquitoes and other pesky bugs which can turn into a real nuisance when trying to enjoy your garden,” he said. Mosquitoes navigate using light and are drawn to shorter, brighter wavelengths, though body heat, sweat, and carbon dioxide remain their primary attractants.

Fans Create a Breeze That Deters Weak Fliers

Saeed recommends setting up outdoor fans around seating areas, especially on still, warm evenings. “Mosquitoes are weak fliers, so having fans in your garden can help keep them away by creating a soft breeze,” he noted. This simple method can make outdoor spaces more comfortable without the need for chemical repellents.

Remove Stagnant Water to Prevent Breeding

To further reduce mosquito populations, gardeners should eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Regularly check and empty birdbaths, flower pots, gutters, and any other containers that collect water. Keeping the garden tidy also helps, as dense, overgrown hedges provide shelter for the insects.

Plant Mosquito-Repelling Plants

Certain plants naturally repel mosquitoes due to their oils. Saeed suggests planting lavender, citronella grass, lemon balm, marigolds, and basil around seating areas to create a natural barrier. These plants not only deter pests but also add fragrance and colour to the garden.

Enjoy the Heatwave Safely

With temperatures set to rise, following these tips can help Brits enjoy their gardens without the nuisance of mosquitoes. Combining fans, proper garden maintenance, and strategic planting offers an effective, eco-friendly approach to pest control during the summer months.
