Andy Burnham Set to Become New Labour Leader and PM

Andy Burnham will today (Friday, July 17) be confirmed as the next leader of the Labour Party, ahead of officially becoming Prime Minister on Monday. The former Greater Manchester Mayor is the sole candidate to replace outgoing Labour leader and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, enjoying the overwhelming support of the Parliamentary Labour Party, with more than 90% backing him.

Special Conference to Confirm Leadership

A special conference in London will formally announce Burnham as Labour leader. While he assumes the party leadership immediately, he will not become Prime Minister until Monday, following Sir Keir Starmer's final address and resignation to King Charles. Burnham will then be invited by the monarch to form a new government.

Burnham's Vision for Change

In his acceptance speech, Burnham will declare he has the "courage to fix the big things that politics has neglected." He will reiterate his commitment to devolving power from Westminster to communities, aiming to give people more control over their lives. He will argue that the country took wrong turns toward privatisation and deregulation since the 1980s, and that economic power must be taken from private companies.
