Andy Burnham Holds Cardiff 'Ask Me Anything' Event

Andy Burnham, the incoming Prime Minister, spent a couple of hours in Cardiff city centre on Wednesday, inviting the public to ask him anything about his plans for the UK. The former Greater Manchester mayor, who is set to take office on Monday, posted a two-and-a-half minute video of his visit on social media, writing: 'When I said I was going to do politics differently, I meant it.'

Public Engagement in Cardiff

Accompanied by the song 'Blue Monday' by New Order, the video showed Burnham posing for selfies and answering questions on a range of issues. He promised 'the biggest house building program in the post-war period' in response to a question about affordable housing. He also shared his personal experience with social care, noting that his father has Alzheimer's, and pledged to increase spending in that area.

When asked about defending the realm, Burnham stated that keeping people safe is 'the first responsibility of any prime minister.' He also revealed that the soundtrack to his first 100 days as Prime Minister would be 'One Day Like This' by Elbow.

Confirmed Premiership

Burnham's premiership has already been confirmed after he received the backing of 369 of the party's 403 MPs, making it mathematically impossible for a rival to enter the contest. Under Labour rules, candidates need the backing of 81 MPs to stand, meaning Burnham is set for a coronation. He has also won the support of eight of the 11 unions affiliated with the party.

Sir Keir Starmer, the outgoing Labour leader, pledged his 'wholehearted support' to Burnham during his final appearance at the despatch box in the House of Commons. When asked if he had any advice for Burnham, Starmer said: 'I will give my wholehearted support to my successor. I want this Labour Government to be a success. I want our country to be a success. I shall give my support privately if asked for, not publicly when not asked for.'
