England football fans planning to attend the 2026 World Cup in the United States this summer are set to be hit with a dramatic sevenfold increase in rail ticket prices for travel to matches in New Jersey. According to a new report from The Athletic, supporters could be forced to pay a staggering $100 (approximately £73.69) for a return rail journey from Pennsylvania station to MetLife Stadium, compared to the usual cost of just $12.90 (£9.51) for the 18-mile trip.
MetLife Stadium Hosts Key Matches
The impressive 82,500-capacity MetLife Stadium, which is home to the New York Giants and New York Jets, will host eight games during the 2026 World Cup tournament. This includes the highly anticipated final on July 19 and England's crucial final group stage match against Panama. Unfortunately for the tens of thousands of fans expected to descend on the venue, special event pricing will be implemented by NJ Transit, New Jersey's primary transportation provider, significantly inflating travel costs.
Official Response and Speculation
A spokesperson for NJ Transit has stated that ticket prices for match day travel have not been finalized, describing any reference to specific costs as "unconfirmed speculation." However, the spokesperson emphasized that the Governor has clearly indicated that the expenses for these eight matches will not be borne by regular commuters. A final decision on the pricing structure is expected to be made in the coming days, leaving fans in limbo as they plan their travel arrangements.
Wider Trend of Price Increases
New Jersey is not the only state implementing substantial travel price hikes ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In Massachusetts, Boston authorities have confirmed that passengers will be charged $80 (£58.97) for travel to Foxboro's Gillette Stadium, a fourfold increase from the usual $20 (£14.74) return fare. This increase will particularly affect England fans, as Thomas Tuchel's side is scheduled to play Ghana in their second group match at that venue.
Impact on England Supporters
The price surges will impact England supporters across multiple locations. In addition to the matches in New Jersey and Massachusetts, England's opening game against Croatia will take place at the Dallas Stadium in Texas. With parking at MetLife Stadium expected to be significantly reduced compared to regular NFL and MLB games, many fans may have little choice but to rely on public transport, further exacerbating the financial burden.
The report highlights that this sevenfold increase marks a sharp contrast to prices during the Club World Cup final held last summer, where fares remained at standard levels. As the tournament approaches, fans are urged to stay updated on official announcements regarding travel costs to avoid unexpected expenses during what should be a celebratory football event.
