One of Spain's most renowned bullfighters, José Antonio Morante Camacho, widely known as Morante de la Puebla, has sustained a very serious injury after a bull's horn inflicted a deep gash that perforated his rectum. The distressing accident occurred during a high-profile event at the historic La Maestranza bullring in Seville.

The incident took place on Sunday, April 20, as Morante faced the fourth bull of the afternoon, named 'Clandestino'. Competing during the tenth event of the prestigious April Fair, the celebrated matador was attempting to control the animal when it charged at his chest, knocking him to the ground. As he tried to escape, one of the bull's horns caught him in the buttocks, resulting in a severe wound.
Footage from the scene shows the horn making contact, with Morante visibly distressed on the ground, clutching the injured area before being carried from the ring by fellow bullfighters. This marked his tenth fight of the event, following a minor earlier injury where a bull caught his ear.
Medical Report Reveals Extent of Injuries
Morante was rushed to hospital, where a detailed medical report outlined the gravity of his condition after a two-hour surgical procedure. The report stated: "It is a bull horn wound on the posterior anal margin with a trajectory of about 10cm, partially damaging the anal sphincter muscles with a perforation of the posterior wall of the rectum of 1.5cm."
The intervention involved washing the wound, repairing the rectal wall and sphincter apparatus, and leaving a suction drain in place. Initially, doctors at the bullring's infirmary conducted a specialised surgical procedure that lasted two hours, highlighting the urgency and complexity of the situation.

The accident has cast a shadow over the remainder of the April Fair, with many deeply concerned about Morante's wellbeing. This comes after heightened expectations for his comeback, following his decision to cut off his traditional bullfighter's coleta (pigtail) in Madrid last October, a move that preceded his highly-anticipated return to the ring on Easter Sunday.
