Martin O'Neill has revealed that he, not the Celtic board, was responsible for the two-week delay in finalising the return of double-winning coaches Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham. The 74-year-old manager admitted he took time to decide whether to continue in the role after the 2025/26 season, which ended with a historic league and Scottish Cup Double.
O'Neill Shoulders Blame for Staff Delay
Fans had criticised CEO Michael Nicholson for the slow negotiations, but O'Neill insisted the delay was his doing. "All this thing about the backroom staff, that is totally down to me delaying, seriously," he said. "It was my fault as much as anything else because there were roles going elsewhere." O'Neill initially accepted a one-year deal to remain as permanent boss, but the process took two weeks as he weighed his options.
Oxlade-Chamberlain Signs Extension
O'Neill also confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 32, has signed a new contract after arriving as a free agent in February. The former Liverpool and Arsenal star scored two crucial winners in the run to five-in-a-row. "I wanted Oxlade-Chamberlain to come back and he will join us in Portugal," O'Neill said. "I think there's more to come from him."
Hatate's Future in Doubt
Reo Hatate, 28, has expressed a desire to test himself at a higher level, and Celtic may sell if a suitable offer arrives. Hatate missed Tuesday's pre-season stalemate with Shelbourne due to illness but will join the squad in Portugal. "He came late to proceedings, he was a bit ill," O'Neill explained.
Scales Suspended for First Two Games
Liam Scales, who recently signed a contract extension until 2030, will miss the first two Premiership matches after accumulating 12 bookings last season. O'Neill praised the defender: "He's been fantastic for us, absolutely fantastic."
Pre-Season Test Against Shelbourne
Celtic drew 1-1 with Shelbourne in Dublin, with Shin Yamada equalising from the penalty spot in the 88th minute. O'Neill was impressed by the League of Ireland side: "Shelbourne were very strong. It was a good test for our young boys and senior players."
