Mersey Views and Straight Talk with Liam Robinson

Liverpool Council Leader Liam Robinson sat down with Pete Price for a candid interview, discussing the city's progress and future plans. From his office overlooking the Mersey waterfront, Robinson highlighted that the council is now on a much firmer footing than when he took the role three years ago.

Council Achievements and Community Initiatives

Children's and adult social services have been rated 'Good,' and government commissioners have left. Robinson outlined community initiatives including new family hubs, free leisure passes for young people, extra youth workers, upgraded playparks, and free bus travel for under-16s in August.

Economic Development and Partnerships

Robinson has forged a close working relationship with Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram. Together, they have secured thousands of new AI roles from Kyndryl and a new European headquarters for Chery commercial vehicles.

Addressing Long-Standing Issues

Price pressed Robinson on Chinatown, which has been a mess due to ownership issues and bankruptcies. Robinson assured that Great George Street ("New Chinatown") is heading to market, and building works at Festival Gardens will start next year. A new Pall Mall office block is planned, alongside a Mayoral Development Corporation targeting the north docks and the area around Everton's new stadium.

Transport and Parking

On stadium transport issues, Robinson admitted there is still work to be done but said journey times are easing. Regarding post-6 PM parking charges, he took criticism but insisted revenue is ring-fenced for enforcement, transport, and road maintenance.

National Politics and Future Events

Robinson backs Andy Burnham for Prime Minister and branded Nigel Farage "Thatcher on steroids." Looking ahead, he mentioned the four Cunard Queens gracing the Mersey and hosting the Tour de France. He noted Liverpool is flooded with event inquiries and film productions, boosting the local economy.

Robinson's final message: "Be proud of this city, but never satisfied."
