World champion Luke Littler has emphatically claimed the Poland Darts Open title with a commanding 8-4 victory over Dutch rival Gian van Veen in Krakow. This triumph marks a significant return to form for Littler, who has faced challenges during the opening weeks of the Darts Premier League season.
Dominant Performance in Krakow Final
Littler delivered a masterclass performance in the final of the inaugural Poland Darts Open, averaging an impressive 108.06 and hitting seven maximum 180 scores throughout the match. The two-time world champion demonstrated clinical finishing and remarkable consistency to secure his first European Tour competition victory of the year.
Van Veen's Historic Nine-Darter
The match featured a spectacular moment when Gian van Veen achieved his first televised nine-dart finish during the fifth leg. The Dutch number one executed back-to-back 180 visits followed by a perfect 141 checkout, sending the Krakow crowd into rapturous applause.
However, Van Veen later admitted this historic achievement may have ultimately cost him the final. "I wish I missed that double 12!" he confessed. "Of course I'm very happy to hit the nine-darter, but I think everyone noticed in the next two or three legs, I wasn't good. I was so excited about the nine-darter - my first one on the stage - and that probably cost me the final today."
Littler's Tournament Journey
Littler navigated a challenging path to the final, comfortably defeating Ross Smith, Josh Rock, and Chris Dobey in earlier rounds. His performance throughout the tournament demonstrated a marked improvement from his Premier League struggles, where he had failed to find his best form during the first three weeks of competition.
"It's been a very good weekend for myself," Littler stated after his victory. "I felt really good throughout the tournament. In the first three weeks of the Premier League I've not felt the best, so I definitely needed this one. I wanted to come here and win the title and that's what I've done. Most importantly it was about playing well, getting that average up and hitting my doubles."
Van Veen's Path to the Final
Gian van Veen reached the championship match after a particularly close encounter with Nathan Aspinall, followed by victories over Wessel Nijman and world number two Luke Humphries. The Dutchman was seeking redemption after his World Championship final defeat to Littler earlier this year, but ultimately fell short despite his historic nine-dart achievement.
Van Veen acknowledged Littler's superior performance, stating: "Fair play to Luke. As he said, that spurred him on. That's how he reads the game, and that's why he is world number one."
Match Turning Point
The crucial moment came immediately after Van Veen's nine-darter, which seemed to ignite Littler's competitive fire. The world champion responded by winning the next four consecutive legs, establishing a commanding lead that proved insurmountable for his opponent.
Although Van Veen managed to reduce the deficit to two legs with some late resistance, his comeback attempt proved too little, too late against Littler's relentless scoring power and clinical finishing under pressure.
This Poland Darts Open victory represents a significant psychological boost for Littler as he returns to Premier League competition, having demonstrated that his world-class abilities remain undiminished despite recent challenges. The tournament also showcased the growing depth of talent in professional darts, with both finalists delivering exceptional performances throughout the weekend event.
