Greater Manchester Mayoral Hustings: Candidates Clash Over Key Issues

The Greater Manchester Mayoral Hustings saw candidates set out their vision for the region’s future as they went head-to-head in their first major public event together. The debate, chaired by Manchester Evening News editor Sarah Lester, was held at the Cheetham School of Music in front of an audience of residents, students, business people and charity leads from across all boroughs.

Labour Record Under Fire

Criticisms were aimed at Labour’s record as the remaining parties argued the boroughs have been left behind and future endeavours need to see them brought onto a more level footing with Manchester. Orbital bus routes, house-building, the reinvigoration of town centres and tax freezes were among the pledges featured in the lively debate.

Tensions Over Immigration and Trans Rights

Moments of tension between the candidates also occurred as they tackled questions on immigration and their stance on trans rights. Green candidate Geraldine Coggins and Reform’s Sian Astley also clashed over the national controversies around Nigel Farage’s donations.

Audience Reactions

Questions were put forward by audience members, who made their judgements on the answers clear with applause and, in a number of cases, boos echoing around the venue. The event was attended by Sian Astley (Reform UK), Geraldine Coggins (Green), Bev Craig (Labour), Phil Eckersley (Conservative), Richard Kilpatrick (Liberal Democrat), and Marlon West (Restore). Independent candidate Marcus Farmer is also standing in the election.
