Georgia Women's Tennis Champions Overshadowed in White House Photo with President Trump
A group of NCAA champions, including the Georgia women's tennis team, met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, but the reigning national title holders were nearly invisible in the official photograph. The image, posted on White House social media specialist Margo Martin's X account, showed the 11 student athletes standing behind a grinning President Trump and the all-male coaching staff, prompting swift backlash from online critics who accused the administration of sidelining the female athletes.
Photo Sparks Widespread Criticism and AI Alterations
The photograph, intended to honor the Georgia Bulldogs after their victory over Texas A&M for the 2025 national title 11 months earlier, instead drew ire for its composition. Critics on X quickly pointed out that the champions were relegated to the background, with one user commenting, 'I can barely see the women. This is embarrassing, and the image is a great visual representation of the Republican Party's attitudes towards women.' Another added, 'This photo was to honor the team, and you can't even see them. Shameful! Low class!'
In response, some users employed artificial intelligence to digitally reposition the women to the forefront of the picture, pushing Trump and the coaching staff into the background. One critic posted such an altered image with the caption, 'Fixed it. Put the champions front and center—congrats to Georgia Women's Tennis.' Others simply removed the men entirely, with one noting, 'That's better lol.'
Contrast with Trump's Stance on Women's Sports
The controversy was particularly pointed given President Trump's public portrayal as a defender of women's sports. In February 2025, he issued an executive order vowing to 'protect opportunities for women and girls to compete in safe and fair sports,' in response to nationwide debates over transgender athletes in amateur female athletics. The order threatened public funding for non-compliant institutions, leading Trump to declare he was 'proud to be the President to SAVE Women's Sports.'
Online critics were quick to reference this boast, with one asking on X, 'What happened to keeping men out of women's sports?' and another sarcastically remarking, 'Really put the woman front & centre, didn't you.' Some users expressed surprise that the photo was genuine, with one writing, 'I didn't think this was real lmao. What an honor for them to be in the back there.' Others, however, were less shocked, with one stating, 'Of course they put the women in the back. Just like the misogynistic a**holes they are.'
