Carol Vorderman Backs Andy Burnham for PM After Starmer Resigns

Carol Vorderman has publicly endorsed Andy Burnham for Prime Minister following Sir Keir Starmer's resignation. Speaking on Good Morning Britain moments before Starmer's emotional address outside Downing Street, Vorderman highlighted Burnham's broad appeal and predicted a shift in political dynamics.

Vorderman's Endorsement

Vorderman said: "He's very, very popular across the North and much loved in Liverpool as well, which is where he's from." She added: "I think this is a time of opportunity, and I think in terms of politics, there are times when you want to vote against someone, and Reform are now going down and down and down in the polls."

She recalled a Labour Party conference in Liverpool last September: "We had four or five hundred people in the theatre inside the Labour Party conference - so everyone in the audience was Labour. And I said then, 'I am telling you now that Keir Starmer will never be voted in again as prime minister.' And then I went on to talk about Andy Burnham, and what happened at the end of that talk? I got a standing ovation, and that was people inside the Labour Party conference."

Starmer's Resignation

Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister less than two years after coming to power. In a statement outside 10 Downing Street, he said his party had asked "whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election." He added: "I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace."

His decision followed a weekend at Chequers with his family. Ministerial allies and Number 10 staff gathered shortly before 9:30am on Monday, signaling the impending announcement.

Labour Leadership Contest

Starmer's resignation triggers a Labour leadership contest, with Andy Burnham seen as the frontrunner. The former Greater Manchester mayor is expected to arrive in Westminster to be sworn in as an MP after winning the Makerfield by-election. Former health secretary Wes Streeting is also expected to stand as a candidate.
