Old Trafford Regeneration Masterplan Unveiled
The ambitious vision for the land around Old Trafford has been revealed, forming part of a series of major plans tabled with local authorities across Greater Manchester. The Wharfside Regeneration Masterplan, backed by Trafford Council, is centered on a new 100,000-seater Manchester United stadium but extends far beyond it, promising around 15,000 new homes and 48,000 new jobs, along with a possible new train station, green spaces, and community amenities.
Council leader Tom Ross described the plan as a 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunity' and a 'foundation for future success' in Trafford. However, many details remain to be worked out, including the delivery of services for new and existing residents.
Bury: Pub Conversion Plans Resubmitted
In Bury, a new attempt to convert the former Rose and Crown pub on Manchester Road into homes has been submitted. Previous plans for a 12-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO) were rejected after 43 objections from neighbours and planning officers, who cited concerns over congestion, parking, insufficient outdoor space, and poor outlook and privacy.
Manchester: Ryebank Fields Dispute Escalates
Campaigners in Chorlton have escalated a row with Manchester Council over the future of Ryebank Fields. Plans to build 120 homes on the land were submitted last February by Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) alongside developers Step Places and Southway Housing Trust. The Ryebank Fields Community Group submitted an alternative application in August to protect the land as a community woodland and meadow. No decision has been made on either application, and the group has written an open letter to chief executive Tom Stannard demanding an explanation for a seven-month delay.
Oldham: Major Flyover Closure
Drivers in Oldham face delays as the Manchester Street Viaduct, a dual carriageway near the town centre, closes for refurbishment until September. The £6.5m works, funded by Oldham Council and the Department for Transport, started on May 18 and are due to finish in December 2026. The A62 will be completely closed in both directions from July 19 to September 3.
Tameside: Housing Estate Decision Pending
A controversial 175-home development on green space off Huddersfield Road in Mossley is set for a decision next week. Developer Wain Homes proposes three, four, and five-bed homes, a play area, and footpaths linking to surrounding green space. The 'linear open space' through the site would include benches, natural play logs, and play boulders.
Stockport: 500 More Homes Planned
Plans have been submitted for over 500 new homes off Chester Road in Woodford, joining a neighboring development that could bring the total to more than 1,300 homes. The proposal includes up to 423 homes, an extra care facility for over-55s with up to 72 beds, shops, food and drink venues, health services, a nursery, and a new nature park.
