Woodbridge in Suffolk, often described as the UK's "most charming" market town, sits on the River Deben and offers a relaxed atmosphere with a high street full of independent shops, cafés, and bakeries. The town is not overly busy but has plenty going on, especially around the town centre.
Riverside walks and boatyards
On a recent visit, I started with a walk along the river, one of the best things to do there. The path runs past a boatyard where old boats are lined up along the water, with benches all the way for taking in the views. The river is usually full of boats, reflecting Woodbridge's strong links to boat-building and rope-making.
Independent shops and local feel
From the river, I crossed the railway line and headed straight towards the High Street, where Woodbridge really comes to life. The street is lined with independent shops, all close together, making it easy to pop in and out. Each shop offers something different, and it's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time browsing.
Places to eat and drink
After shopping, I stopped for something to eat at Brownbread Bakery or the Cornish Bakery, both worth visiting for cakes, pastries, and savoury options. Seating inside makes it easy to take a break before heading back out. The town also has plenty of pubs and restaurants for a cosy evening meal.
Markets and nearby attractions
Woodbridge hosts regular markets on Market Hill, along with a farmers' market every other Saturday. These small details make it feel like a proper market town rather than just somewhere to pass through. Just a short drive away is Sutton Hoo, one of the UK's most important archaeological sites, where an Anglo-Saxon ship burial was discovered.
