BBC bosses are reportedly in talks to sign former football referee and Gladiators star Mark Clattenburg for this year's Strictly Come Dancing. The 51-year-old, who retired from refereeing in 2017, became a familiar face on the BBC reboot of Gladiators in 2024, where he served as referee.
Potential Addition to the Line-Up
A source told The Sun: "Mark manages to appeal to young and old, families, children and football fans – plus he’s easy on the eye for the mums." The insider added: "That amazing fan base is a major bonus, the sort of thing the BBC is always keen to utilise. No final decision has been made yet but if Mark doesn’t make the cut this year, he’ll remain a target." The line-up is reportedly "shaping up nicely but there are a few spots left."
Controversy and Background
In 2024, Clattenburg became embroiled in controversy after taking on the role of referee analyst for Nottingham Forest. Following a defeat by Everton, the club accused VAR Stuart Attwell of bias, prompting an investigation by the Football Association and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited. Clattenburg's role involved assessing refereeing performances and leading the club's response to alleged unjustified decisions.
Gladiators on Strictly
Clattenburg is not the first Gladiators star to join the ballroom. Fire (Montell Douglas) competed in 2024, partnered with Johannes Radebe. Nitro (Harry Aikines-Aryeetey) reached ninth place with Karen Hauer on the Christmas special. Other confirmed celebrities include Dani Dyer, who returns after an injury forced her to withdraw last year; EastEnders star Lacey Turner; former Neighbours star Delta Goodrum; Big Brother host Will Best; Love Islander Cach Mercer; and Kim Kardashian’s hairdresser Chris Appleton.
