Wes Streeting has stated that Sir Keir Starmer should establish a timeline for resigning as Prime Minister if Andy Burnham secures victory in this week's Makerfield by-election. The comments come amid growing pressure on Starmer's leadership.
Streeting's Stance on Leadership
Speaking at a press conference in central London where he outlined his economic vision, the senior Labour figure reiterated his intention to stand in any future leadership contest. "I've been extremely clear about this. I think there should be a contest. I have every intention of standing in that contest," he said.
Mr. Streeting identified three key issues currently plaguing Labour: leadership, policy, and culture. He emphasized the wealth of talent within the parliamentary party but noted that it is not being utilized effectively. "The divides between Labour's different tribes are often overstated," he added.
Call for Reflection After By-Election
Streeting expressed hope that after Thursday's by-election, which he expects Andy Burnham to win, the Prime Minister would reflect on his position and set out a timetable for his departure. "I think that would be a better way forward for everyone and would enable that better culture we aspire to," he said.
Prime Minister's Response
Sir Keir Starmer, attending the G7 summit in France, dismissed the leadership threats. He insisted he would "bring back the change that people desperately need" and continue with his mandate. "So very many times on my political journey, people have said to me it's not possible. They said it's not possible to turn the Labour Party around. It's not possible to win an election. ... That's why I intend not to walk away from this but to carry on with what I was elected to do," he told reporters.
By-Election Context
Andy Burnham is the favorite to win the Makerfield by-election in Greater Manchester, according to multiple opinion polls. His main challenger is Reform UK's Robert Kenyon, though the party is concerned about losing votes to the more hardline Restore Britain party on issues like migration.
