Sir Paul McCartney has revealed that he considers the late John Lennon to have been the favourite Beatle and the group's unofficial leader. The 83-year-old musician made the comments during an appearance on the YouTube series Chicken Shop Date, hosted by Amelia Dimoldenberg.
When asked to name his favourite Beatle, Sir Paul replied: 'Well, there’s only one left now. Currently, it’s Ringo. During the Beatles, I think we all used to look up to John, because he was like the leader, even though there wasn’t officially a leader of the group. I think all of us might have said John was our favourite Beatle.'
The interview took place over vegan chicken nuggets and chips at Camden's Temple of Seitan. Topics also included Sir Paul's new album, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane, released on Friday, which features his fellow Beatle Sir Ringo Starr on the track 'Home To Us'.
Sir Paul also shared a story about a gift he gave his late wife Linda, inspired by Greek mogul Aristotle Onassis. He had a bracelet engraved with 'L-I-L-Y', meaning 'Linda, I Love You', because lilies reminded him of her.
The Beatles, formed in 1960, became the best-selling musical act of all time, with 16 UK number one albums and 18 UK number one singles. After the band's split in 1970, Lennon released 11 studio albums before his death in 1980.
