Kate Garraway clashed with Labour minister Chris Bryant on Good Morning Britain, challenging him over comparisons between Labour's actions to secure Andy Burnham's election and Nigel Farage's recent announcement that he is standing down as MP for Clacton on Sea to trigger a by-election.
Garraway Challenges Bryant on By-Election Comparisons
During the interview, Garraway pointed out that Labour had done a similar thing in Makerfield when a candidate stood down to make way for Andy Burnham. Bryant retorted that the situations were 'completely and utterly different,' adding that he knew Garraway would raise the issue.
Garraway pressed him, saying, 'It's a fair point, isn't it? Let's finish this. Let's address it.' Bryant insisted that Josh Simons, who stood down in Makerfield, did so because he believed the country needed a change of direction, and that it was not a gimmick to avoid scrutiny.
Bryant Dismisses Farage's 'Establishment' Narrative
When Garraway tried to interject, Bryant cut her off, saying, 'Please, please, please! This whole infamy, infamy-they've all got an infamy joke that Farage does all the time.' He argued that Farage himself is part of the establishment, having been an elected politician longer than Bryant has.
Nigel Farage announced on Tuesday July 7 that he was stepping down as an MP to fight a 'people versus the establishment' by-election. The Reform UK leader insisted he had done nothing wrong after facing pressure over unregistered donations of cash and support.
Farage's Defiant Stance and Party Reactions
Farage said he had 'never been angrier in my life' as he complained about media treatment of his family. He declared, 'I've decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions. This will be a people versus the establishment by-election. It's a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment to frankly tell them where to go, and that is why I will be putting my name forward to stand in this by-election.'
However, Kemi Badenoch confirmed that the Tories will not stand a candidate, and Labour also said they would not field a candidate in the Clacton by-election.
