Badenoch Slams Farage and Burnham as Egotistical Wasters

Badenoch Unleashes Withering Attack on Political Rivals

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has launched a fierce attack on two of her major political rivals, Nigel Farage and Andy Burnham, accusing them of wasting Britain's time and money with what she described as 'ego trips'. In a statement issued on July 9, 2026, Badenoch criticised the Labour Party's incoming leader and the Reform UK figurehead for triggering unnecessary by-elections at a critical juncture for the country.

'At a time when Britain faces serious questions about how we fund our armed forces, how we cut welfare, and how we get the economy growing, the Labour Party is getting a new leader whose first priority is to have a summer holiday, while Nigel Farage has thrown a massive hissy fit to fight an election against a man dressed as a bin,' Badenoch said.

By-Elections Under Fire

Badenoch contrasted the Conservatives' recent by-election victory in Aberdeen South, which she said was about protecting tens of thousands of jobs in the oil and gas industry, with the Makerfield by-election, which she characterised as being about 'one man's job and one man's ego - Andy Burnham's'. She also targeted the upcoming Clacton by-election, calling it a similar exercise in self-interest for Farage.

'The truth is that all of this is a huge waste of everyone's time and money,' Badenoch asserted. She claimed that Farage had triggered the by-election only because he 'can't take the pressure of scrutiny over his dodgy donations'. She emphasised that every MP must declare donations, including those received in the year before becoming an MP, and accused Farage of failing to declare a £5 million personal 'gift' and stays at the home of a convicted criminal.

'Nigel Farage seems to think he’s above the rules,' Badenoch said. 'He didn’t want anyone knowing he’d been given a fishy £5 million personal ‘gift’, and he didn’t want anyone knowing he stays in the house of a convicted criminal, so he didn’t declare them.'

National Security and Economic Concerns

Badenoch argued that these distractions come at a pivotal moment, with the defence secretary having recently quit the government, warning that Keir Starmer's failure to fund the armed forces adequately would leave the country 'less safe'. She highlighted threats from Russia and Iran, stating, 'The era of peace is over and Britain urgently needs to rearm to protect ourselves.'

She criticised Burnham for not committing to increased defence spending and for offering only vague statements on the economy, such as 'there’s room for movement on tax', which she interpreted as a sign of further tax rises. 'Britain’s national security should be Burnham’s number one priority,' Badenoch said. 'If we are to ensure the armed forces get the backing they need, we need a growing economy. More tax rises will further kill off any chance of growth.'

Conservative Plan for Recovery

Badenoch outlined her own proposals, including cutting the welfare bill to fund defence, scrapping stamp duty to stimulate the housing market, and abolishing business rates to support high street firms. 'Serious policies for serious times. That is what the Conservative Party offers,' she concluded.
