Cracker Barrel, one of America's oldest restaurant chains, has reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating Pride Month despite a wave of bigoted attacks. The company, headquartered in Lebanon, Tennessee, posted an image on Instagram showing a rainbow-coloured chair to mark the occasion, stating: 'We are excited to celebrate Pride Month with our employees and guests. Everyone is always welcome at our table.'
The move has drawn criticism from some social media users, who accused the chain of being too 'woke'. One Twitter user wrote: 'These woke companies are hell bent on destroying themselves.' Another said: 'Sad that they care more about money and themselves than their customers. Oh well, another place never to give my hard earned money to!'
However, many others welcomed the gesture. A Facebook user commented: 'Love that. I’ve always loved Cracker Barrel. Love them even more now. It’s a small gesture, but you know what? It’s those small gestures of kindness that matter the most.' Another added: 'Wonderful news! I’ve avoided Cracker Barrel for as long as I can remember, not knowing if my family was truly welcome. We’ll be sure to stop by our local location soon!'
The chain has a controversial past regarding LGBTQ+ rights. In 1991, it fired at least nine gay employees and announced it would no longer employ members of the gay community, a policy it rescinded the following year. In 2019, it adopted a zero-discrimination policy after an anti-LGBT+ pastor planned an event at one of its stores.
Despite the backlash, Cracker Barrel has reiterated its support for the LGBTQ+ community. On Facebook, the company wrote: 'We will always choose to stand for what’s right no matter what.'
