The US immigration agent who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, a US citizen, in Minneapolis has been identified as a 10-year law enforcement veteran. The killing has sparked outrage and renewed calls for reform of immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump.
In a separate incident on the same day, federal immigration agents shot two people in Portland, Oregon. Both victims are alive, but the extent of their injuries is unknown. Local lawmakers, including Congresswoman Maxine Dexter and Mayor Keith Wilson, condemned the shootings and called for an end to ICE operations in the city.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has threatened to withhold funding for the Department of Homeland Security unless reforms are enacted. Murphy is preparing a package that would require warrants for arrests, ban agents from wearing masks during enforcement, and limit border patrol operations far from the border.
The FBI has taken over the investigation into the Minneapolis killing and has cut off Minnesota's access to evidence. The incident has intensified debate over Trump's immigration policies, which he has described as the 'largest operation' targeting immigrants.
