UK Passport Fees to Exceed £100 for First Time in April

The cost of obtaining a UK passport is set to undergo a significant increase starting next month, with prices soaring above £100 for adult applications for the first time. The Home Office has confirmed proposed plans that will see an 8 per cent rise in fees across all passport types, including those for children and pensioners, effective from Wednesday, 8 April 2026.

Home Office Justifies Fee Hikes

In a statement, the Home Office explained that the fee increases are designed to "move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation." The government emphasises that no profit is made from passport applications; instead, the fees contribute to processing costs, consular support overseas for issues like lost or stolen passports, and border processing for British citizens. These changes are subject to Parliamentary approval.

Detailed Breakdown of New Passport Costs

Adult Passports: From April 8, standard online applications will rise from £94.50 to £102, while postal applications could increase from £107 to £115.50.

Pensioner Passports: A free 32-page concessionary passport remains available for individuals born on or before 2 September 1929 who hold British nationality, including those who naturalised or registered. However, delivery charges for returning passports or documents may apply.

Additional Service Fees and Overseas Applications

The next-day premium service in the UK is also affected, with fees potentially increasing from £222 to £239.50. For overseas applications, online adult passports could rise from £108 to £116.50, and child passports from £70 to £75.50. Paper applications overseas may see adult fees go from £120.50 to £130 and child fees from £82.50 to £89.

Historical Context and Travel Advice

This increase follows a 7 per cent rise in April 2025, when adult passports went from £88.50 to £94.50 and child online applications from £57.50 to £61.50. Prior increases occurred in April 2024 and February 2023, with the 2023 hike being the first in five years. The government advises applying well in advance, as renewal processes can take up to three weeks or longer during peak travel periods like Easter and summer holidays.
