Luxurious Property and Its High-Profile Owner
This Great Gatsby-style fortress is owned by Thomas J. Swann III, the Co-CEO and Director of The Swan Group, a family-owned holding company with significant interests in plumbing, heating, and water product manufacturing and distribution, alongside a substantial commercial real estate portfolio. The 57-year-old former lawyer and investment banker shares the opulent residence with his husband, Joe Townley, 47, and their two sets of young twins. Fortunately, none of the family members were present during the terrifying incident.
Violent Assault on Housekeeper
The sole occupant at the time was the family's female housekeeper, who encountered brutal violence upon being discovered by the intruder. Swann provided harrowing details to The Boston Globe, explaining that the assailant 'dragged' the housekeeper by her hair, forced her through the home at gunpoint, and at one point pistol-whipped her. She was then bound and left in the garage before the suspect fled the scene in Swann's high-end Porsche.
The caretaker, demonstrating remarkable resilience, eventually managed to free herself and rushed to a neighbor's residence, prompting an emergency 911 call around 8:50 a.m., as confirmed by police records reviewed by the outlet. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released. 'She was in total shock,' Swann stated. 'It was extremely traumatic.'
Investigation and Community Reaction
Authorities later located and recovered the stolen luxury sports car, but the suspect remains at large. The Beverly Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police are actively investigating the robbery. Swann indicated that his Porsche and other valuable items were taken, though he could not specify further details due to the ongoing investigation.
The intrusion has profoundly unsettled the affluent neighborhood, where violent crime is exceptionally rare. 'It's just the most beautiful neighborhood,' remarked Janet Riley, a resident living directly across the street from the property. She recalled noticing unusual commotion on Saturday morning and expressed concern, adding that the mansion's front gates have remained securely closed since the event. Prior to Swann's acquisition, Charlie Benevento occupied the mansion and oversaw an extensive, multi-year renovation in collaboration with interior designer Linda Zarifi. Benevento placed the property on the market in 2021, where it sold for over $18 million, marking the highest price ever achieved for the home.
Swann has suggested that the perpetrator likely had prior knowledge of the residence. 'It was probably someone familiar with the house,' he claimed. When contacted for comment, the Massachusetts State Police indicated there are no updates to report at this time.
