Trump Administration Retains Control of $70 Million ICE Luxury Jet

The Trump administration will maintain oversight of a controversial $70 million luxury jet originally acquired by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to support mass deportation operations. First Lady Melania Trump is among the high-profile figures authorized to utilise the aircraft, alongside certain cabinet secretaries, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Lavish Amenities and Intended Purpose

Images obtained by NBC News reveal the jet's opulent features, which include:

  • A bedroom furnished with a queen-sized bed
  • Multiple shower facilities
  • A fully equipped kitchen
  • Four large flat-screen televisions
  • A marble cocktail bar

Despite these luxurious appointments, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) asserts the aircraft was procured to facilitate deportations and provide secure, rapid long-range mobility for cabinet members requiring command and control capabilities. A DHS spokesperson confirmed the purchase occurred prior to the confirmation of new Secretary Markwayne Mullin, stating, "This aircraft will be available to cabinet members who need secure command and control and rapid long-range mobility."

Internal Concerns and Political Backlash

Some DHS officials have privately expressed scepticism to NBC News regarding whether the luxury 747 jet is essential for former Secretary Kristi Noem to execute the president's mass deportation agenda. When questioned about the jet's deportation utility, a DHS spokesperson indicated, "at least one of the bedrooms is currently being converted for seating to prepare the aircraft to meet the demands of its deportation mission."

The aircraft, already leased by DHS, was recently employed for Noem's trip to Tel Aviv. However, political appointees in ICE and the White House initially opposed the purchase before abruptly reversing their decision, according to NBC's investigation. A DHS official disclosed, "That particular plane was a 'no,' we weren't going to buy it. Then all of a sudden, they said 'yes.'"

Republican Party Reactions and Media Strategy

NBC's exclusive report prompted the Republican National Committee (RNC) to disseminate the story to influential power brokers and media pundits within the party via a targeted email list on Thursday morning. One GOP operator on the RNC's distribution list told the Daily Mail, "Knives are out for Noem. They only send out stories they want folks to know about. They don't send out every clipping."

RNC Communications Director Zach Parkinson downplayed the significance, telling the Daily Mail, "Whoever this 'source' is clearly has no idea how media monitoring works. The RNC Communications team routinely monitors and alerts all kinds of stories - even fake ones - as it helps Republican communicators push back on legacy media lies." Parkinson added, "Secretary Noem and all of President Trump's appointees at DHS are doing great work and have the RNC's full support."

Administrative Changes and Future Use

Noem was dismissed as DHS Secretary on March 5, with Mullin confirmed by the Senate shortly thereafter. The White House deferred comment requests to DHS. Officials reportedly planned how the jet could be "retrofitted" for deportation purposes while also accommodating personal travel for Noem, according to the NBC report.

ICE maintains that the aircraft will be utilised for deportations and travel by Cabinet officials, including DHS leadership figures like Noem. The ongoing controversy highlights tensions between operational necessities, luxurious expenditures, and political optics within the administration's immigration enforcement strategies.
