Christopher Whitmore, 79, has appeared in court accused of causing serious injuries to a married couple in a crash on the A697 in Northumberland. The incident occurred on September 18, 2024, at the crossroads with the B6341 between Rothbury and Alnwick.
Alleged Failure to Give Way
Whitmore was driving a Volvo XC90 along the B6341 from Rothbury when he allegedly failed to give way at the junction, pulling out in front of the victims' vehicle traveling northbound on the A697. Prosecutor Jade Houston told South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court that there were numerous 'give way' and 'slow' signs on the approach to the junction.
The male victim suffered a broken sternum, broken toes, and bruising on the heart, while the female victim sustained a broken collarbone, broken ribs, and a fracture to her back. She spent a week in hospital.
Plea and Trial Date
Whitmore, of Craigpark Gardens, Galashiels, Scottish Borders, appeared via video link from his home and pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving. He admitted involvement in the collision but claimed his driving was 'not below the standard one would expect' and thus not careless.
Magistrates accepted jurisdiction and listed the case for trial on October 19 at Newcastle Magistrates' Court. Whitmore was released on unconditional bail.
