Schoolgirl's Haunting Final Text Message Before Tragic Death
In a chilling case that shocked a community, a 15-year-old girl sent her boyfriend a terrifying final text message before she was murdered. Riley Crossman dispatched two messages just 12 minutes apart on May 7, 2019, with the haunting content: "Andy's in my room." Andy was Andy McCauley Jr, the partner of Riley's mother, Chantal Oakley.
A Mother's Discovery and Desperate Search
Tragically, Riley's boyfriend was asleep when the messages arrived and did not see them in time. The following day, her mother reported her missing after noticing Riley was not in her bedroom that morning. Chantal Oakley had last seen her daughter at their home in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, with her grandmother. She told police she observed Riley's bedroom light on with the door closed around 10:30 p.m., while McCauley was asleep downstairs.
"I was mad and scared because, at that point, no one had heard from her," Chantal explained at the time. "Then I got the call from the school saying she had been marked absent. She would not run away. She loves us, she wouldn't want us to be upset."
The Discovery and Investigation
Riley's body was discovered nine days later on a remote embankment in Martinsburg, approximately 26 miles from her home, following an extensive search involving hundreds of volunteers. The investigation quickly turned to Andy McCauley Jr after cadaver dogs detected the scent of a deceased body and drywall mud in the back of his truck. This same drywall mud was also found on Riley's body.
Police noted that McCauley changed his story multiple times regarding his whereabouts when Riley disappeared. Initially, he claimed he never left his construction work site, but later altered his account to say he drove home to obtain cocaine for himself and a co-worker.
Conviction and Sentencing
In October 2021, Andy McCauley Jr was convicted of first-degree murder, death of a child by a custodian through child abuse, and concealment of a body. He showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. Jurors heard evidence that he entered Riley's bedroom and suffocated her with a pillow, which contained DNA evidence of her blood and saliva.
During his sentencing, McCauley chose not to speak and received a life prison term with no possibility of parole. This left Riley's devastated family with only speculation about the motives behind her brutal murder. The case highlights the tragic loss of a young life and the haunting final communication that preceded it.
