Son Admits Storing Dead Mother in Freezer for Years While Spending Her Pension
A son has confessed to storing his deceased mother's body in a freezer for an extended period while continuing to withdraw and spend her pension funds. Christopher Phillips, aged 60, was arrested after the grim discovery of his 89-year-old mother Sylvia Phillips' remains in a freezer at a property in Porthcawl on February 17.
Guilty Pleas Entered in Court
Appearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, April 16, Phillips entered a guilty plea to preventing the lawful and decent burial of his mother, an offence that occurred between October 2, 2022, and February 17. The court was informed that it is believed Mrs Phillips died in 2023, though the exact cause of death remains undetermined pending further investigation.
In addition to the burial charge, Phillips pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud. He failed to notify the Department for Work and Pensions and Bridgend Council of his mother's death, allowing him to illegally access her pension and benefits.
Discovery and Investigation Details
The body was found at an address on Poplar Crescent after police received a call expressing concern for a woman's welfare. A post-mortem examination was conducted at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, but a provisional cause of death could not be provided due to the need for additional forensic analysis.
An inquest opening at Pontypridd Coroners' Court on Wednesday, April 15, heard that how Mrs Phillips died is still unknown. The hearing was adjourned to a later date to allow for more evidence to be gathered.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing Adjournment
Defence barrister Ruth Smith stated that her client had submitted a basis of plea and requested an adjournment for sentencing to enable a psychiatric report to be prepared. The Recorder of Cardiff, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, agreed to adjourn Phillips' sentencing until June 2.
This case highlights a disturbing instance of financial exploitation and the concealment of a death, raising questions about oversight in pension and benefit systems. The community in Porthcawl has been left shocked by the revelations, as authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding Sylvia Phillips' death and the subsequent actions of her son.
