A boat carrying more than 200 migrants bound for Europe capsized off the coast of Gambia on New Year's Eve, leaving at least seven people dead and dozens more feared missing.
Frantic Search and Rescue Operation
Gambian President Adama Barrow confirmed in a state broadcast that 102 survivors have been rescued and seven bodies recovered from the vessel, which overturned in the North Bank region. The national emergency response plan was activated, with emergency services, local fishermen, and volunteers joining forces in a frantic search for victims near the village of Jinack.
President Barrow stated that some of the survivors were receiving urgent medical care. The Gambian Ministry of Defence reported that the boat was found "grounded on a sandbank," though the exact cause of the capsizing remains unclear.
A Perilous and Deadly Route
This latest incident highlights the extreme dangers of the irregular migration route from West Africa to Europe. Thousands of Africans, desperate for better opportunities, routinely risk their lives traversing the Atlantic coast by boat.
The passage connecting the West African coast across Gambia, Senegal, and Mauritania to Spain's Canary Islands is widely recognised as one of the world's deadliest migrant passages. Many never complete the journey due to the high risk of overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels capsizing.
This tragedy is not an isolated event. Key recent incidents on this route include:
- In August 2025, around 150 people were dead or missing after a boat from Gambia capsized off Mauritania.
- In July 2024, a similar incident killed more than a dozen migrants, with 150 others declared missing.
Government Response and Vows for Change
As he condoled with the families of the victims, President Barrow called the accident a "painful reminder of the dangerous and life-threatening nature of irregular migration." He vowed a full investigation into the disaster.
"The government will strengthen efforts to prevent irregular migration and remains determined to create safer and more dignified opportunities for young people to fulfil their dreams," Barrow added, pledging to deploy adequate resources to assist survivors and intensify search efforts.
