Former world champion cyclist Rohan Dennis has publicly broken his silence for the first time since receiving a suspended jail sentence for the tragic incident that resulted in his wife Melissa Hoskins' death. The 35-year-old athlete returned to social media with a series of posts that have sparked controversy and distress, given the context of the case.
The Tragic Incident and Court Outcome
Melissa Hoskins was fatally struck by the car Dennis was driving outside their upmarket Adelaide home on December 30, 2023, following an argument between the couple. The court heard that the dispute centered on kitchen renovations before Dennis attempted to leave the property. Hoskins jumped onto the car bonnet, fell to the ground, and was run over, suffering serious injuries that led to her death at Royal Adelaide Hospital.
In May 2025, Dennis walked free from court after pleading guilty to an aggravated charge of creating likelihood of harm. Judge Press emphasized that while Dennis had disregarded his wife's safety, he was not criminally responsible for her death. During police interviews, Dennis stated he had no intention of harming Hoskins, describing the incident as "the last thing I'd ever bloody do."
Controversial Social Media Return
Dennis's return to Instagram has been marked by posts that many consider insensitive. He shared two photos of a Porsche 911, captioning one with "What an absolute weapon" – a phrase that has been criticized as extremely poor wording given the nature of the tragedy. The caption serves as a distressing reminder of how Hoskins lost her life.
Additionally, Dennis posted a close-up photo of a Ventum bicycle with a hundred-points emoji. Ventum cycles are premium models, with some retailing for up to $17,500. He also shared then quickly deleted an image appearing to show his son and daughter riding bikes on a suburban street.
Confrontation with Journalist
The cyclist posted a fiery outburst directed at an Adelaide Advertiser journalist who contacted him for comment about his social media activity. Dennis wrote "Didn't take these rats long" accompanied by a cry-laughing emoji and shared the reporter's message complete with her phone number, potentially breaching her privacy.
Family Perspectives and Moving Forward
Unlike Dennis, who refused to answer when asked if he wanted to apologize outside court, Hoskins' parents have expressed their desire to maintain relationships for the sake of the couple's children. Peter Hoskins stated through tears, "We're glad the trial is over, and shortened considerably by Rohan's guilty plea. It is now time for us to move on, which would be Melissa's expectations of us."
He emphasized the importance of maintaining "a well-mannered relationship" with Dennis for the sake of their grandchildren, Oliver and Madeleine, adding, "They have done nothing wrong... we miss Melissa terribly. She was someone really special."
The case has highlighted the complex aftermath of tragic incidents involving family members, with Dennis's social media activity now bringing renewed attention to the events that changed multiple lives forever.
