Online Predator Sentenced for Attempting to Meet Decoy Child
Alan Williams, a 57-year-old man from Cheshire, has been imprisoned for one year after embarking on a two-hour journey to Hull with the intention of meeting what he believed was a 12-year-old girl. In a disturbing twist, Williams had taped his wedding ring to the sun visor of his vehicle before setting off, a detail that emerged during his sentencing at Hull Crown Court.
Explicit Messages and Planned Rendezvous
The court heard that Williams initiated contact with a decoy profile on Snapchat, operated by law enforcement, under the impression he was communicating with a 12-year-old girl from Hull. Over a series of exchanges between May 10 and 28 last year, he sent a friend request, requested images, and complimented the decoy, calling her "pretty" and "gorgeous." He explicitly stated that he "fancied" her and proposed meeting for activities such as bowling and a meal.
Prosecutor Billy Torbett detailed how Williams arranged to meet the girl at Hull railway station on May 28. On the day, he messaged to confirm his arrival and waited outside Caffè Nero near the station, where police apprehended him at 9.08 am. Officers noted he was pacing nervously, and his vehicle was parked nearby with a 24-hour parking ticket. The wedding ring attached to the visor was a stark symbol of his marital status, which he had removed prior to the journey.
Guilty Plea and Expressions of Remorse
Williams pleaded guilty to two charges: attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child under 16 and attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming. Initially denying the offences, he changed his plea ahead of a planned trial. Defence counsel Rachel Scott stated that Williams made no excuses for his behaviour, expressing deep embarrassment and shame. She emphasised that he has since deleted all social media accounts and taken steps to address his actions, though he denies any sexual interest in children.
Judge John Thackray KC highlighted the gravity of the case, noting Williams's full awareness that he was communicating with a child. "You travelled over two hours intending to meet a 12-year-old girl," the judge said, concluding that the offence warranted an immediate custodial sentence due to its seriousness.
Additional Penalties and Aftermath
In addition to the one-year prison term, Williams, of Ullswater Terrace, Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, received a seven-year sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender for a decade. He was also ordered to pay a £187 victims' surcharge. The court noted he had no prior convictions and had been employed by an air conditioning firm, working nationally. This case underscores the effectiveness of decoy operations in combating online child exploitation, serving as a stark warning to potential offenders.
