Justin Timberlake's DWI Arrest Video Released After Legal Battle

Video footage of Justin Timberlake's 2024 arrest for driving while impaired in New York has been made public, despite efforts by his legal team to block its release. The footage, which spans approximately eight hours, captures the pop star's difficulties with field sobriety tests and his interactions with police officers in Sag Harbor, a village in the Hamptons.

Struggles with Sobriety Tests Captured on Camera

In the video, Timberlake is seen attempting to perform standard field sobriety tests, including walking heel-to-toe in a straight line and standing on one leg. At one point, he tells the officers, "These are, like, really hard tests." The footage shows him appearing flustered as he listens to instructions, apologising to the police and explaining that his heart is racing due to nervousness.

The arrest occurred in June 2024 after Sag Harbor police reported that Timberlake ran a stop sign, veered out of his lane, and exited his BMW smelling of alcohol. When questioned, Timberlake admitted to consuming one martini and stated he was following friends home in the affluent beach town, located about 100 miles east of New York City.

Legal Proceedings and Release Agreement

Timberlake's lawyers had initially filed a lawsuit to prevent the video's release, arguing that it would "devastate" his privacy and cause "severe and irreparable harm" to his reputation by exposing him to public ridicule. However, in a joint filing with the village on Friday, they conceded that the video does not constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy under New York's public information law and agreed to its disclosure.

Sag Harbor officials, represented by lawyer Vincent Toomey, expressed satisfaction with the resolution, noting their commitment to complying with state public records laws. The village stated that the footage was reviewed and redacted to address concerns about public safety, officer safety, and personal privacy.

Outcome of the Case and Public Safety Measures

In September 2024, Timberlake pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of impaired driving, reducing the initial misdemeanor to a noncriminal traffic violation. As part of the plea deal, he agreed to:

  • Pay a $500 fine
  • Complete 25 hours of community service
  • Serve a 90-day license suspension
  • Deliver a public safety announcement warning against the dangers of drunken driving

Timberlake, a Tennessee native, has since urged drivers not to get behind the wheel after consuming even a single alcoholic drink, as part of his sentencing requirements. The release of the video follows records requests from media outlets, including The Associated Press, highlighting ongoing public interest in the case.
