Jeremy Meeks Recalls Chaotic Aftermath of Viral Mugshot Fame
The man once dubbed the 'hot felon', Jeremy Meeks, has opened up about the intense and often frustrating consequences of his sudden internet fame. In a recent podcast appearance, the 42-year-old model and actor reflected on the immediate period after his 2014 mugshot went viral, revealing a deluge of attention that disrupted his life behind bars.
An Overwhelming Influx of Mail and Unwanted Attention
Speaking on Matthew Cox's Inside True Crime podcast, Meeks described receiving approximately 300 letters daily, a volume he characterised as "just too much." The correspondence included explicit content and financial offers, with Meeks noting, "I'm getting naked pictures, I'm getting money orders. All kind of money's being sent in." This unprecedented influx highlighted the bizarre reality of his newfound celebrity status while incarcerated.
Jail Visit System Exploited by Strangers
The situation escalated when random individuals began exploiting the Sacramento County Jail's visiting system. Meeks was allocated two visitor passes per week, a precious resource for maintaining family connections. However, strangers started claiming these slots, arriving unannounced from distant locations like Tennessee. Meeks recounted the frustration of being forced to deny these visits, only to have jail staff insist on counting them against his weekly allowance.
"They're like, 'Well, I'm still taking your visit. You can deny it, but I'm still going to take your visit for the week,'" Meeks explained. "So now my family can't come because I got random people coming to see me and it was so frustrating." He pleaded with these uninvited guests to cease their visits, emphasising his children's need to see him, but the system's rigidity left him powerless.
Personal Life and Career Trajectory
Meeks, who gained nicknames like "prison bae" and "the blue-eyed bandit," was serving time for firearm possession and resisting arrest in 2015-2016. This followed a prior nine-year sentence for grand theft and corporal injury to a child. Despite his criminal past, his striking appearance in the Stockton Police Department's Facebook mugshot launched an unexpected modelling career.
Now a father of two, Meeks shares a 15-year-old son, Jeremy Jr., with his ex-wife Melissa Meeks, and a seven-year-old son, Jayden, with former partner Chloe Green, the Topshop heiress. His personal life has been as tumultuous as his public persona, with both relationships ending amicably in recent years.
Conflict with Correctional Officers and Ongoing Fame
Meeks also disclosed tensions with jail staff, alleging physical abuse driven by jealousy. "The hate came from the correction officers," he stated, describing beatings during shift changes. This hostility contrasted with his acceptance among fellow inmates, underscoring the complexities of his incarceration experience.
Today, Meeks boasts 2.2 million social media followers and continues to capitalise on his fame, securing a brand ambassadorship with clothing company SAYA in November. His journey from convicted felon to fashion icon remains a testament to the unpredictable nature of viral internet phenomena, though his recollections reveal the profound personal costs of such notoriety.
