A six-month-old baby boy has died after being ejected from his teenage mother's car during a crash in Fort Worth, Texas. The incident occurred on March 7 when Karla Lopez, 17, ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle, according to police.
Sebastian Reyes, who was unrestrained in the front seat, was thrown from the car upon impact. He was rushed to Cook Children's Medical Center with serious injuries, including brain trauma, swelling, and cerebral bleeding, as detailed in a Facebook post by his grandmother, Casandra Rios.
Sebastian died in the paediatric intensive care unit on March 9, two days after the crash, confirmed the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Lopez was taken to hospital with non-critical injuries and later arrested. She has been charged with reckless injury to a child resulting in serious bodily injury and released on a $30,000 bond. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Prosecutors may upgrade the charges to manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide following Sebastian's death.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist the family with funeral costs, raising over $2,100 as of Tuesday. The crash remains under investigation.
