The killing of notorious drug cartel leader Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as "El Mencho," in Mexico's western state of Jalisco on Sunday has unleashed a wave of widespread violence, leaving tourists stranded and prompting urgent safety measures across the region.
Tourists Advised to Shelter in Place Amid Chaos
In popular tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, visitors were left stranded and advised to shelter in place as reports emerged of burning cars and a chaotic "war zone" atmosphere. The unrest created significant disruptions, with many travellers unable to leave the area due to the escalating violence.
Flight Suspensions and Event Cancellations
Major airlines, including Air Canada and United Airlines, suspended flights to the region in response to the security threats. Additionally, schools cancelled classes and several football matches were postponed to ensure public safety, highlighting the broad impact of the cartel-related violence on daily life and tourism.
Government Response and Military Deployment
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum moved quickly to reassure the public, stating that order had been restored and the country was "at peace, is calm." Defence Secretary General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo confirmed that eight cartel members were killed alongside El Mencho during the operation. To bolster security, 2,500 additional troops were deployed, significantly increasing the military presence in affected areas to prevent further outbreaks of violence.
