Career Criminal Jailed After Dropping £200,000 Cocaine in Bag for Life During Police Stop
A drug dealer described as a 'career criminal' by police has been sentenced to six years in prison after being caught with £200,000 worth of cocaine in a plastic Bag for Life during a stop and search operation in Leeds. Anh Hoang, 47, was detained by officers from West Yorkshire Police's Programme Precision initiative on January 3 this year under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Police Operation Uncovers Significant Drug Haul
As Hoang was detained in the Gipton area of Leeds, he dropped a plastic bag at his feet, which contained two 1kg bricks of a white powder later confirmed to be cocaine. The drugs had an estimated street value of £200,000, highlighting the scale of his involvement in the illicit trade. During the arrest, police also recovered two phones and £288 in cash from his possession.
A subsequent search of his home on Copgrove Road revealed further evidence, including a designer clothing haul worth £24,000, £420 in a wallet, scales with white residue, and a razor blade. These items pointed to his active role in drug distribution activities.
Extensive Criminal History Revealed in Court
At Leeds Crown Court, it was disclosed that Hoang has a long history of criminal behaviour, with 20 previous convictions for 68 offences. These included dealing in Class A drugs and conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, for which he had previously received sentences of five years and 11 years. Detective Inspector Kevin Daly of Programme Precision stated that Hoang is a 'career criminal' who has continued to play a significant role in the supply of Class A drugs despite prior imprisonment.
Representing Hoang, Kara Frith argued that her client was primarily a low-level street dealer who had succumbed to temptation after losing his job and struggling to find employment. She told the court that Hoang was angry at himself for letting down his family and children, and that he saw drug dealing as a quick-fix solution to support himself and his dependents.
Sentencing and Consequences
Judge Kate Rayfield sentenced Hoang to six years in prison following his guilty plea to possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply. The case underscores the ongoing efforts by West Yorkshire Police to combat drug-related crime through targeted operations like Programme Precision, which aims to disrupt the supply chains of dangerous substances in the region.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the severe penalties faced by those involved in the drug trade, particularly repeat offenders who contribute to the proliferation of Class A drugs in communities. The successful prosecution highlights the importance of vigilant policing and community cooperation in tackling such crimes.
