Child's Desperate Rooftop Escape in Louisiana Mass Shooting That Killed Eight
In a horrific incident that has shocked the nation, a child was found dead on a roof after a desperate bid to escape a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, which left eight children dead. The tragedy unfolded across three properties in the Cedar Grove area, with authorities describing it as a domestic incident.
Early Morning Horror in Shreveport
Shortly after 6am Central Time, Shamar Elkins, a 31-year-old army veteran, allegedly carried out the attacks, according to police reports. At a press conference on Sunday, a police spokesperson read out the ages of the victims, ranging from 1 to 12 years old, prompting audible gasps from attendees. The large crime scene spanned multiple locations, complicating the initial response.
Details of the Escape and Aftermath
Shreveport Police Department Corporal Chris Bordelon stated that seven children were killed inside a second house, while one was discovered dead on the roof, apparently after trying to flee. It remains unclear if this child was related to Elkins. State Representative Tammy Phelps noted that some children attempted to escape through a back door, highlighting the chaos of the scene.
Following the shootings, Elkins fled the scene and committed a carjacking, leading to a police chase where he was fatally shot by officers. Two women were also wounded and are in critical condition, officials confirmed.
Community and Official Reactions
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is from Shreveport, expressed heartbreak in separate statements. Johnson praised law enforcement's response, saying, "We're holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."
Investigation and Context
Investigators have not disclosed what triggered the violence, but Bordelon emphasized that detectives are confident it was "entirely a domestic incident." The shooting marks the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since eight people were killed in a Chicago suburb in January 2024, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.
The community remains in mourning as authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances of this devastating event.
