Joseph Duggar Receives Jailhouse Letter from Brother-in-law Urging Faith Amid Molestation Allegations
Joseph Duggar, 31, received a jailhouse letter from his brother-in-law, Austin Forsyth, 32, encouraging him to maintain his faith while in custody following his arrest last month on molestation allegations. The letter, dated March 25 and sent through the Washington County Detention Facility in Arkansas, was obtained by People magazine and reveals Forsyth's spiritual support during this turbulent period.
Spiritual Support in Times of Crisis
In the correspondence, Forsyth, who is married to Joseph's sister Joy-Anna Duggar, expressed love and religious encouragement. He stated, 'I want you to know that I love you! Jesus loves you, and continues to draw you closer to Him ... God works despite the sin of man for his good.' Forsyth advised Joseph to refrain from discussing his legal issues over communications, emphasizing, 'only be talking to your attorney.' This advice came before Joseph's release on a $600,000 bond.
Family Dynamics and Legal Troubles
Forsyth noted in the letter that he was 'praising God' for the closer relationship he and Joy-Anna had developed with Joseph and his wife Kendra over the past year and a half. Kendra, 27, was arrested on March 20 on charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and false imprisonment, later being released on bond. Forsyth assured that he and Joy-Anna are providing support to Kendra, stating, 'God knew that Kendra was going to need help,' and 'we will, and are helping her!'
Joseph responded with gratitude, writing, 'It means the world to have family like you! I'm soo [grateful] for all the people that [have] jumped right in and been there to support [her] ... love [y'all] so much!' Meanwhile, Joy-Anna issued a statement on March 25, expressing grief for the victim and taking time with her family, saying, 'My heart is with the victim, and I am grieved by the pain and harm caused. I have been a wreck this week and am taking time to process.'
Details of the Allegations and Legal Proceedings
Joseph Duggar has pleaded not guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior and is scheduled to appear in court on May 18. The allegations stem from a 2020 incident in Panama City Beach, Florida, during a vacation. Authorities reported that Joseph asked a nine-year-old girl to sit next to him on a couch, covered them with a blanket, manipulated her underwear, grazed her genitals, and rubbed her thighs. The victim stated the incidents stopped after Joseph apologized.
Joseph was charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 years old and lewd and lascivious behavior by a person 18 or older. He and Kendra, married since 2017, are parents to four children aged seven, six, five, and three.
Broader Family Legal History
This is not the first legal issue involving underage sex in the Duggar family. Oldest son Josh Duggar, 38, is currently serving a prison sentence after a 2021 conviction for receiving and possessing material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. In 2015, the family's TLC series was cancelled following revelations that Josh had molested five young girls as a teenager.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, parents of the 19 children, addressed the initial incident in a 2015 Facebook post, stating, 'Back 12 years ago our family went through one of the most difficult times of our lives ... When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes and we were shocked.' They emphasized their reliance on faith during that period.
