Two British Men Face Decade in Spanish Prison for Magaluf Bar Attack
Two British nationals are confronting the prospect of up to ten years imprisonment in Spain following a violent altercation at a bar in Majorca, where they allegedly assaulted staff with broken glass after being denied further alcoholic beverages.
Violent Late-Night Brawl in Palmanova
The incident unfolded in the early hours of June 22 last year, specifically at 2am, within a restaurant located in Palmanova, adjacent to the renowned party destination of Magaluf. According to reports, the confrontation erupted after bar staff intervened to cut off the two men from additional drinks, a decision prompted by their verbal harassment of other patrons inside the establishment.
Alleged Assault with Broken Glass
The situation escalated rapidly when the individuals, aged 24 and 34 at the time and whose identities remain undisclosed, reportedly pushed a female employee to the floor, causing her to strike her head. This aggressive act occurred immediately after they were informed that no more alcohol would be served to them.
Subsequently, a male colleague who attempted to intervene in the scuffle was struck from behind with a glass, which was utilised as a weapon during the physical struggle. The entire altercation was captured on closed-circuit television, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing legal proceedings.
Injuries Sustained by Victims
During the melee, a customer who endeavoured to de-escalate the conflict was struck in the neck with broken shards of glass, resulting from the glass shattering in one of the assailant's hands. The female employee also sustained cuts to her legs from glass fragments that had shattered across the floor. All injured parties required urgent medical attention and were subsequently transported to Son Espases Hospital in Palma, the capital of Majorca, where they received stitches for open wounds affecting vital areas including the neck, head, arms, and legs.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
The two British men were apprehended shortly after the attack and held in custody. The Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office has formally requested a ten-year prison sentence for both individuals, with a trial scheduled to take place at a criminal court in Palma. In addition to potential incarceration, the accused are liable to pay compensation totalling €15,450 to the victims.
Official Statements and Investigation
Following the incident, a spokesman for the Civil Guard provided details, stating that officers, who were part of summer reinforcements deployed to Majorca, were conducting routine security patrols when alerted to a mass fight occurring in a premises near their location. Upon arrival, they observed a man covered in blood brandishing a broken bottle and attacking others present. The officers swiftly subdued him and confiscated the broken bottle.
Staff informed the authorities that the man, his companion, and two others who had fled the scene had assaulted employees and two strangers. Medical backup was requested to assist the three injured individuals. The blood-covered man, identified as the 24-year-old, was arrested alongside his 33-year-old companion on suspicion of attempted homicide, wounding, and causing serious public disorder.
This case underscores the severe legal consequences that can arise from violent behaviour abroad, particularly in popular tourist destinations like Majorca, where local authorities maintain a stringent stance on public disorder and assault.
