British Tourists Face Chaos at Ibiza Airport as EU Border System Fails

British holidaymakers at Ibiza Airport have been hit by chaos as the European Union's new digital entry and exit system (EES) malfunctioned, causing long queues and missed flights. The system, which requires non-EU citizens to register biometric information, has been plagued by technical issues since its launch last October.

Passengers reported waiting up to five hours in line, with some flights departing half empty as travellers failed to reach their gates on time. Airlines and airport operators have called for the system to be suspended during the peak summer season, arguing that it is causing unacceptable disruption.

The EES is designed to enhance border security by recording entry and exit data for third-country nationals, including UK citizens. However, its implementation has been marred by delays and glitches, leading to widespread frustration among travellers and industry stakeholders.

British tourists, who now face additional scrutiny at EU borders, have been particularly affected. Many have taken to social media to express their anger, with some claiming they were forced to abandon their holidays due to the delays. The UK Foreign Office has advised travellers to allow extra time for border checks.
