British Pensioner Vanishes Without Trace in Spanish Coastal Town
Spanish authorities have initiated an urgent search operation for a 70-year-old British pensioner who has disappeared under mysterious circumstances from a holiday home in the coastal region of Almeria. Paul Daniel Strange, a retired builder and locksmith from Leigh-on-Sea, was last seen on Thursday in the town of Palomares, where he had been staying at a friend's apartment during a getaway.
Family's Agonising Wait for News
The devoted family man was expected to begin his long journey back to the United Kingdom in his van that morning, but he failed to make any contact, triggering immediate concern among his loved ones and prompting police involvement. His frantic family has now revealed a puzzling twist in the investigation, as a neighbour reportedly observed Mr. Strange leaving the property, yet a friend who later entered the apartment discovered that his computer and clothing had been left behind.
The distraught son of the missing father-of-three, who is also named Paul, has issued a heartbreaking public plea for information as the family endures what he describes as an 'agonising' wait for any news. Speaking about the family's nightmare situation, he stated: 'We're obviously extremely worried and have already contacted police in Essex who have been in touch with Interpol.'
Uncharacteristic Disappearance Sparks Major Concerns
He added that he understands British authorities have now made direct contact with Spanish police to coordinate efforts and 'begin searching' for the beloved pensioner. 'We just want him to get in touch with us if he sees this message,' he emphasised. 'His phone was switched off on Thursday and the following day a message came up saying it was unavailable. It's extremely unlike Dad not to stay in touch.'
Mr. Strange regularly drives to Spain to visit friends, making him familiar with the area, and during return journeys he typically contacts his wife every few hours, relying on her to arrange accommodation along the route. 'This time there's been nothing,' his son explained. 'He was due to leave his accommodation last Thursday to drive to Calais.'
Detailed Description and Baffling Circumstances
The missing man drives a silver Sprinter van, approximately six or seven years old, featuring a picture of a Carp fish on the back. The vehicle has UK registration plates with the number YE19 FAU. Mr. Strange, originally from east London, speaks with a distinctive London accent and has a birth mark on his left temple.
'What we can't fathom is the fact that a neighbour saw him leaving the place where he was staying on Thursday, which was the day he was due to start the drive home after arriving in Palomares on Good Friday,' his son continued. 'But when a friend got into the apartment to check up on him, he saw he'd left belongings inside including a laptop and clothes. He had a small bag with money and his passport on him, but the stuff he'd left are not the sort of things someone wouldn't take with them if they weren't planning on coming back.'
He added emphatically: 'My dad is a healthy, happy bloke and not someone with any reason to voluntarily disappear. This is obviously completely out-of-character and very worrying.'
Family Members Travel to Spain to Aid Search
In response to the crisis, Mr. Strange's son and son-in-law flew to Spain last night to assist with the search efforts. His worried wife Diane provided further distressing details: 'They're flying to Alicante and then they're going to head to Palomeras to the apartment where he was staying. He'd left a glass of orange juice and biscuits on the table alongside a black top and his glasses. And he'd not locked the place up properly apparently. It's as if he'd just got up and walked out. It's so unlike my husband. We're all so worried.'
