Atlanta Man Charged in String of Attacks Killing DHS Worker and Another Woman

An Atlanta man has been formally charged following a harrowing series of attacks across the metropolitan area that resulted in the deaths of two women and left a man fighting for his life in critical condition. The incidents, which unfolded over several hours, have drawn significant attention from federal authorities, particularly after one victim was identified as a Department of Homeland Security employee.

Details of the Tragic Attacks

The violent spree began in the early hours of Monday morning. At approximately 1 a.m., the first victim was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds near a restaurant in the Decatur area. DeKalb County Police Chief Gregory Padrick confirmed that the woman was transported to a hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. Authorities have not yet publicly released her identity.

Roughly an hour later, in the suburb of Brookhaven—located about 12 miles northwest of the first scene—a 49-year-old homeless man was shot multiple times while sleeping outside a grocery store. Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley stated that the man, whose name has not been disclosed, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Chief Gurley emphasized the apparent randomness of this assault, describing it as "a completely random attack on a member of our unhoused community."

The final attack occurred just before 7 a.m. in the suburb of Panthersville, more than 10 miles from the previous location. Officers responding to an emergency call found a woman with both gunshot and stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified as Lauren Bullis, an employee of the Department of Homeland Security who was reportedly walking her dog at the time.

Victim Remembered and Investigation Progress

In a heartfelt statement, the family of Lauren Bullis remembered her as a "selfless, kind and compassionate" individual. "She deeply loved her family and found joy in running, reading and traveling," the family shared. "Her warmth and generosity touched everyone surrounding her."

Investigators from Brookhaven have determined that all three attacks are connected. The suspect, 26-year-old Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a native of the United Kingdom, was taken into custody later on Monday during a traffic stop in Troup County, which borders Alabama. Court records show he is charged with two counts of malice murder, aggravated assault, and multiple firearms offenses.

Political and Immigration Scrutiny Intensifies

The case has quickly escalated into a political matter, drawing a statement from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Secretary Mullin, who assumed his role last month following the dismissal of Kristi Noem, expressed that "these acts of pure evil have devastated our Department and my prayers are with the families of the victims."

In his statement, posted on social media, Mullin raised concerns about the suspect's background, noting that Adon Abel was granted U.S. citizenship in 2022 during the presidency of Democrat Joe Biden. The Secretary cataloged a litany of the defendant's previous alleged crimes, including a sexual battery conviction, though he did not specify whether these occurred before naturalization. Online court records indicate that someone listed as Adon Olaolukitan, sharing the same birth date as Adon Abel, pleaded guilty in June of last year in Chatham County, Georgia, to four counts of misdemeanor sexual battery.

Mullin highlighted that since President Donald Trump took office, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services—a DHS agency—has worked to prevent individuals with criminal histories from attaining citizenship. However, the United States has long prohibited those convicted of most violent felonies from becoming citizens. It remains unclear whether Adon Abel, or Adon Olaolukitan if they are the same person, had a criminal record predating his 2022 citizenship grant.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Questions

Adon Abel waived his initial court appearance on Tuesday. Court records do not list an attorney who might speak on his behalf at this time. Authorities have stated they believe at least one victim, the wounded man, was targeted at random. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the other two victims were also selected randomly.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for further details regarding the suspect's immigration history and criminal background. The case continues to develop as local and federal officials collaborate to uncover the full circumstances behind this tragic series of events in the Atlanta area.
