Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has issued a stark warning that the upcoming Scottish Parliament election in May could represent his party's "only chance" to bring an end to SNP rule. Speaking at the Scottish Labour conference in Paisley, Sarwar delivered a combative address, telling political rivals: "Underestimate me at your peril."
Urgent Appeal to Voters Amid Westminster Frustration
Sarwar acknowledged significant "frustration" and "anger" directed toward the Labour Government at Westminster, following his recent call for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to resign. However, he urged Scottish voters to "focus on the task at hand right now" with the Holyrood election just ten weeks away.
The Scottish Labour leader made a direct appeal to the electorate, suggesting they should support his party "with enthusiasm," "with anger," or even "by holding your nose." He emphasized that this election represents "our best chance, perhaps our only chance, to end SNP rule."
Poll Position and Reform UK Challenge
Sarwar's conference address came as a new poll placed Scottish Labour in fourth position for Holyrood, trailing behind the SNP, Reform UK, and the Scottish Greens. Despite this challenging position, Sarwar remained defiant, insisting that only Labour can defeat John Swinney's SNP and form the next Scottish Government.
He launched a particularly strong attack on Reform UK, which current polling suggests could secure second place behind the SNP. Sarwar claimed that Nigel Farage and his party "don't give a damn about Scotland" and described Reform as "just Tories in disguise."
"They are the same team with a different badge," Sarwar asserted. "The same people who screwed our country before who now want the chance to screw it again."
Clear Distinction from Westminster Politics
Sarwar made a deliberate effort to separate the Holyrood election from Westminster politics, stating clearly: "It is not a protest. It is not about Westminster or about pollsters or commentator chatter."
He emphasized that the election is fundamentally about "who runs Scotland and what they will do with that immense honour of serving Scotland's people."
Policy Promises for a Labour Scotland
Should Labour emerge victorious on May 7th, Sarwar pledged his government would "fight to fix the SNP's mess, fight to get the basics right, and fight for a better future." He outlined several key policy commitments during his conference speech.
Housing Revolution Pledge
Sarwar promised what he described as "the biggest housebuilding revolution in the history of devolution," committing to construct 125,000 new homes over the next five-year Scottish Parliament term. He criticized the SNP's record on housing, stating: "The SNP's failure to build enough homes is holding Scotland back."
While the current SNP Government has declared a housing emergency, Sarwar insisted it would be a "Scottish Labour government who will get Scotland building again."
NHS Workforce Reforms
The Scottish Labour leader also announced significant reforms for the National Health Service, focusing particularly on workforce planning. He stressed the importance of "amazing staff" to the health service and revealed plans to require all students on publicly funded medical, dental, or nursing courses to work in Scotland's NHS or social care system for at least five years after graduation.
"When it comes to our NHS, if we pay for your training here, we will expect you to stay here," Sarwar declared. "We will change the rules so any Scottish medical, dental or nursing student on a publicly funded place will, after graduating, be expected to work in Scotland's NHS or social care system for at least five years, or repay their tuition support and bursaries."
Strategic Positioning Against Multiple Rivals
Sarwar's conference speech represented a multi-front political strategy, simultaneously attacking the SNP's record in government while warning against voting for Reform UK as a protest option. He argued that "Reform cannot win in Scotland and Reform cannot beat the SNP" and that "a vote for Reform just lets the SNP cling on to power – stopping change."
The Scottish Labour leader concluded with a rallying cry to voters, urging them to "come together and back the only party that can get rid of this incompetent SNP Government that deserves to lose." With the election campaign now intensifying, Sarwar has positioned himself as the sole alternative to continued SNP governance in Scotland.
