Pep Guardiola has been linked with the England head coach role after Thomas Tuchel faced criticism following the Three Lions' 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday night. Tuchel's defensive substitutions were questioned as England failed to hold a one-goal lead.
Guardiola's Interest in International Management
Guardiola has expressed a desire to manage an international team before retiring and is open to taking charge of England. The Football Association (FA) has long admired the former Manchester City boss, having attempted to hire him in 2024. However, Guardiola admitted he lacks the energy to immediately return to coaching after leaving City at the end of last season and is committed to recharging.
CFG Clause Blocks Immediate Move
Guardiola recently started a role as global ambassador for the City Football Group (CFG), which includes advising clubs like Palermo, Lommel, and Troyes. A clause in his contract prevents him from taking any other coaching position while employed by CFG. Although CFG is not expected to block a potential England move, it remains a significant hurdle. Other obstacles include Guardiola's need for rest and the FA's current commitment to Tuchel, who still has a contract to fulfill.
Speculation has intensified ahead of Saturday's third-place play-off against France, but Guardiola's immediate availability is constrained by his CFG obligations and personal desire for a break from coaching.
