Makerfield By-Election: Polling Station Times and Rules

Voters across the Makerfield constituency are preparing to head to the polls for a highly anticipated by-election that has drawn intense national attention.

Why the by-election is happening

The by-election was triggered following the sudden resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons on May 14, creating a vacancy intended to allow Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham a route back into Westminster.

While there are fourteen candidates vying for the seat, a self-described 'plucky plumber' appears to be the biggest obstacle in Mr Burnham's way. Reform's Robert Kenyon will be hoping to spoil the party when the polls open on Thursday, June 18.

Polling station opening hours

If you are planning to cast your ballot in person on Thursday, here is everything you need to know about when, where, and how to vote.

Polling stations across Makerfield will open at 7am and close at 10pm on polling day. As long as you are in the queue at your designated polling station by 10pm, you will legally be permitted to cast your vote - even if you have not reached the front of the line by closing time.

Where to vote

You don't need to bring your polling card with you to vote, but it will list the specific station assigned to you. If you have misplaced it, you can find your designated polling station by entering your postcode on the Wigan Council election portal.

You must vote at your assigned station. You cannot cast your ballot at a different location within the constituency.

Voter ID requirements

Under UK electoral law, you must bring an approved form of photo identification to vote in person. If you do not have a valid ID, you will be turned away.

Accepted forms of ID include:

  • UK or EEA passport
  • UK photocard driving licence (full or provisional)
  • Blue badge
  • Older person's bus pass or Oyster 60+ card

Expired ID is still acceptable as long as the photograph still bears a true likeness to you.

Counting and declaration

Counting will begin immediately after the polls close at 10pm on Thursday evening, with the official declaration expected in the early hours of Friday morning.
