Wunmi Mosaku Radiates at Essence Black Women In Hollywood Awards
Actress Wunmi Mosaku, aged 39, showcased her pregnancy glow in a stunning pearl-embellished dress as she attended the Essence Black Women In Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles, California, on Thursday. The Sinners star, who is expecting her second child, was accompanied by her husband, Tash Moseley, for a series of red carpet photographs at the Fairmont Century Plaza venue.
Glamorous Fashion and Loving Moments
The actress's elegant gown featured a scoop neckline, intricate pearl detailing across the fabric, and fringed accents at the waist. She elevated her look with pointed heels and bold gold earrings, exuding confidence and style. Meanwhile, Tash Moseley opted for a smart-casual ensemble, wearing a stone blazer paired with dark blue denim jeans. In a tender display, he wrapped an arm around his wife, gently placing his hand on her growing baby bump.
The event, which celebrated achievements in film and television, attracted numerous A-list celebrities, including Zendaya, Kerry Washington, and Halle Bailey. Wunmi's appearance at the awards ceremony followed her recent candid remarks about the controversy surrounding her BAFTA win.
Addressing the BAFTA Controversy
In a recent interview with Glamour Magazine, Wunmi Mosaku revealed that a "shadow" was cast over her Best Supporting Actress victory at the BAFTA awards last month. The incident involved Tourette's sufferer John Davidson, who involuntarily uttered a racial slur during the ceremony while Wunmi's co-stars, Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, were presenting an award.
John Davidson, whose life is documented in the nominated film I Swear, made the comment due to a tic associated with his condition. Despite the live event occurring earlier, the slur was included in the televised edit broadcast by the BBC two hours later. Wunmi expressed her distress, stating, "Obviously, the BAFTA win, there's been a shadow. It's been very difficult since the BBC decided to air what it aired."
Support and Criticism
Wunmi emphasized that her frustration is directed at the BBC, not John Davidson, who has since apologized to Jordan and Lindo. She highlighted the lack of care shown by the broadcaster, questioning, "We'd been told that it was a family-friendly show at 7pm and that there was a two-hour delay. So how could it possibly have been left in?" The BBC acknowledged the error, stating that the moment "was aired in error" and that its Executive Complaints Unit would conduct a fast-tracked investigation.
Other cast members from Sinners have also spoken out. Jayme Lawson criticized BAFTA and the BBC, alleging that John Davidson's disability was exploited and that the broadcaster failed to protect the dignity of Black individuals present. She remarked, "That man's disability got exploited that night, and it led to multiple offences. That's the BAFTA's fault. And then the BBC, to air what they aired, is careless."
Career Highlights and Personal Joy
Despite the controversy, Sinners has been a career milestone for Wunmi Mosaku, dominating awards season and grossing $368 million worldwide. She reflected on the achievement, saying, "This is such a rare moment, and it's such a big moment for the film: 16 nominations! This is the moment that I have worked 20 years towards." Additionally, she shared her excitement when co-star Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor at The Actor Awards, joking that she forgot her pregnancy and jumped with joy.
Wunmi remains resolute in her stance against the BBC's handling of the incident, vowing that she "won't forgive" the broadcaster for keeping the slur in the broadcast. She concluded, "That's the bit that really kind of kept me awake at night and brought tears to my eyes. I was like, you really chose to keep that in? I can't understand it, and I'm not sure if I can forgive it."
