Fundraiser for James Van Der Beek's Family Exceeds $500,000 Goal, Now Targets $1 Million

A GoFundMe campaign established to support the family of actor James Van Der Beek has rapidly surpassed its initial $500,000 fundraising goal within just hours of its creation. The target has since been increased to $1 million as donations continue to pour in from thousands of supporters.

Remembering the Dawson's Creek Star

James Van Der Beek, widely celebrated for his portrayal of Dawson Leery in the beloved television series Dawson's Creek, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 48 after a courageous battle with bowel cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday, Kimberly Van Der Beek announced her husband's death and shared a link to the GoFundMe page, explaining that friends had set it up to assist with expenses related to his extensive medical treatment. "My friends created this link to support me and my children during this time," she wrote. "With gratitude and a broken heart."

Financial Struggles and Community Support

The fundraiser highlights the significant financial strain the family has faced due to Van Der Beek's medical care costs, which have reportedly depleted their resources. According to the campaign description, "They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time." It further emphasizes that support from friends, family, and the broader community will be crucial as they navigate the future.

Initially set at $500,000, the goal was adjusted to $700,000 just four hours after the fundraiser went live, with contributions from over 7,000 individuals nearing the original target. By the time of writing, the goal had been raised again to $1 million, reflecting an overwhelming outpouring of generosity.

Van Der Beek's Openness About Medical Expenses

Van Der Beek had been transparent about the challenges of covering his cancer treatment costs. Following his diagnosis in November 2024, he began auctioning memorabilia from the film Varsity Blues, where he played a high school quarterback, to help fund his own treatment and support other cancer patients. On Instagram, he stated, "100% of my net proceeds will go to families recovering from the financial burden of cancer (including my own)."

Last year, he also auctioned items from Dawson's Creek, telling People magazine, "I've been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it's clear that the time is now."

Castmates Unite for Charity Event

In a show of solidarity, Van Der Beek's former Dawson's Creek co-stars, including Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson, organized a one-night charity event in New York last September to raise funds for his family. Lin-Manuel Miranda participated in place of Van Der Beek, who was unable to attend due to his illness.

This collective effort underscores the deep impact Van Der Beek had on both his colleagues and fans, as the community rallies to provide financial and emotional support during this tragic time.
