US Speaker Johnson Seeks to 'Calm Waters' in London Amid Trump's Greenland Demands
US Speaker in London to 'Calm Waters' Over Trump Threats

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has embarked on a diplomatic mission to London aimed at reassuring British politicians that the historic alliance between the two nations remains strong, despite recent tensions stirred by former President Donald Trump.

A Mission to Reassure Amid Rising Tensions

Johnson's visit, which took place on Monday 20 January 2026, was planned to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. However, it was swiftly overshadowed by geopolitical friction. The trip followed an overnight attack from Mr Trump targeting Sir Keir Starmer's government over its decision to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands and renewed pressure over his long-standing demand for the US to take over Greenland.

Addressing members of both the Commons and the Lords, Johnson stated his primary objective was to "help calm the waters". He emphasised that the UK and US, as close allies, have always been able to "work through our differences calmly as friends" and assured Parliament that this would continue.

Alignment with Starmer's Approach

Following a meeting at Downing Street with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Johnson expressed his agreement with the UK leader's approach of seeking resolution through dialogue. He praised Starmer's emphasis on the mutual respect and results-focused partnership that has defined the transatlantic relationship.

"I thought that was exactly the right message and the right tone," Johnson told MPs and peers, referencing the Prime Minister's comments. He revealed he had spoken "at length" with President Trump, informing him that his mission in London was to encourage friends and stabilise the situation.

Security Concerns and Global Strength

The senior Republican figure defended the Trump administration's stance by framing it within a broader global security context. He argued that the administration's efforts to make America "safer and stronger and more prosperous than ever before" were a necessary response to challenges from China, Russia, and Iran.

Specifically addressing the Greenland controversy, Johnson stated, "Clearly President Trump is taking seriously the modern and dynamic threats that China and Russia pose for our global security, especially in focus in the last few days as it relates to the Arctic." Trump has cited national security as the rationale for pursuing the Arctic territory, a move firmly opposed by European allies.

Johnson also took the opportunity to thank the UK for its support in a recent US operation to seize a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic, calling it a "great example" of open dialogue and partnership. He concluded with a firm belief that "a strong America is good for the entire world, and a strong UK is as well," while noting each nation must also prioritise its own domestic concerns.
