The UK government has imposed sanctions on two Iraqi men, identifying them as key financial operatives for Islamic State (IS). The men were instrumental in managing the group's revenue streams and bolstering its leadership structure, according to an announcement on Friday.
Sami Jasim Muhammad Jaata al-Jaburi and Abd el Hamid Salim Ibrahim Brukan al-Khatouni have been added to the UK's sanctions list due to their involvement in handling the terrorist organisation's funds.
Al-Jaburi was deeply involved in overseeing Islamic State's finances and participated in 'several terrorist operations' during the period when the group controlled territory. He was also implicated in the illicit smuggling of oil products.
Al-Khatouni served as a financial officer for Islamic State, the official notice confirmed.
Both men are now subject to an immediate asset freeze, an arms embargo, and a travel ban. Their names are also listed on the INTERPOL-UN Security Council Special Notice system.
