UK Foreign Office responds to fatal Swiss bar fire

The UK Foreign Office has issued an urgent statement following a catastrophic fire that tore through a popular bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, claiming dozens of lives and injuring around 100 people during New Year's Eve celebrations.

Foreign Office Offers Support to British Nationals

The Foreign Office confirmed it is monitoring the situation closely and its consular staff are prepared to support any British nationals affected by the tragedy. A spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with all those injured and killed in the terrible tragedy in Crans-Montana, and we pay tribute to the Swiss emergency services who are leading the response.”

Officials stated that, as of now, they have not received any specific requests for consular assistance from UK nationals or their families. However, the UK embassy in Bern reiterated its 24/7 support, providing a dedicated contact number for any British citizens in need.

Details of the Crans-Montana Tragedy

The fire broke out at approximately 1:30am on 1 January 2026 inside the Le Constellation Bar and Lounge, a venue with a capacity for up to 400 people. The resort, a favourite with international tourists, was packed for New Year's Eve festivities when the blaze erupted.

Valais Canton police commander Frédéric Gisler explained that identifying the victims and informing their families is a complex process that will take time. Attorney General of Valais, Béatrice Pilloud, confirmed that nationals from multiple countries are likely among the victims, though no identities have been formally released.

French authorities have confirmed that two of their nationals are among the injured.

Investigation Rules Out Terror Attack

Swiss authorities have opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. At this stage, officials are favouring the theory of an accidental fire and have explicitly ruled out terrorism. “There is no question of an attack,” stated Ms Pilloud.

Significant forensic resources are being mobilised to work through the scene. A large police cordon remains in place around the bar as the investigation continues.
