British Couple Jailed in Iran Accuse Government of Abandonment in War Zone
A British man imprisoned alongside his wife in Iran for a decade on spying charges has launched a scathing criticism of the UK Government, accusing officials of abandoning them in a perilous war zone. Craig Foreman, speaking from Tehran's notorious Evin Prison, stated that he and his partner Lindsay feel "let down, alone and completely frustrated" by the handling of their case.
Decade-Long Sentence Based on "Falsified Evidence"
The 53-year-old couple from East Sussex were arrested in January 2025 while travelling through Iran on a global motorcycle trip. They were subsequently convicted of espionage for the UK and Israel, charges they vehemently deny. Mr Foreman insists the evidence against them was fabricated to secure the maximum sentence.
In a powerful statement from prison, Mr Foreman declared: "We are both currently serving 14 months into a 10-year prison sentence in Evin Prison, Tehran, for crimes that were never committed. Our Government are fully aware of this information and know we are 100% innocent."
Direct Appeal to Senior Government Figures
The imprisoned Briton made a direct plea to key political figures, stating: "I am asking you, Sir Keir Starmer, Yvette Cooper, Hamish Falconer and Hugo Shorter, you know we are innocent. Go public with the information – you have to clearly step up, step out of the shadows and help us. Our lives are constantly at risk."
He emphasised their deteriorating situation: "We are now in a prison in a war zone. We have gone from a challenging situation to a life-threatening situation. You have chosen to give us zero information on what's happening to us."
Dangerous Conditions and Family Anguish
The couple's imprisonment has taken place against a backdrop of extreme danger. A family spokesperson revealed that an explosion recently blew out windows in Mr Foreman's holding area, sending ceiling plaster raining down on inmates. Ms Foreman described to her son how women dived under metal bunk beds for cover during the incident.
Ms Foreman's son, Joe Bennett, provided a heartbreaking account of his mother's condition: "My mum is in pieces. She's gone from always finding the positive to feeling completely lost. The sense that she's been abandoned by her own Government is breaking her."
He detailed their appalling living conditions:
- Sleeping on metal bunks without mattresses
- Experiencing constant physical pain
- Mr Foreman suffering with an untreated dental abscess
Mr Bennett characterised their detention as "slow-motion destruction" rather than mere imprisonment.
Government Travel Warnings and Response
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) maintains a clear warning against all travel to Iran for British nationals, citing a "significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention." Despite this advisory, the Foremans found themselves caught in what they describe as a nightmare scenario.
Mr Foreman concluded his statement with gratitude for family support: "Lastly, we would like to say a massive thank you to our families and friends who have been... and are still the driving force and the backbone fighting for our release and our safe passage back home."
The FCDO has been approached for comment regarding the couple's allegations of governmental abandonment and their current dangerous circumstances in a war zone prison.
